<p>Life moves so fast these days that our homes need to work harder than ever too. They’re not just places to live, eat and sleep, our homes are our sanctuaries from the demands of life, providing comfort and calm. But as many of us know, achieving this interiors nirvana is hard to pull off.</p>



<p>So, here’s where the we pull in the big guns!  We&#8217;ve spoken to two experts at respected multidisciplinary design practice <a href="https://www.hollandgreen.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HollandGreen</a>, which has studios in Oxfordshire, London and the Cotswolds and includes architects, interior designers, landscape designers and project managers (yep, basically they can manage your project in-house from start to finish).</p>



<p>Charmaine White is an expert in interior design and Mark Latchford is the Director of landscape design, and both have given their insight into how to create impact with our interior and exterior spaces. Over to you both.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-1-incorporate-natural-materials">1. <strong>Incorporate natural materials</strong></h2>

<p>Using natural materials like wood and stone in your interiors scheme gives your living spaces a timeless quality. We also advise weaving in a mix of eye-levels in a room to add visual interest – perhaps through lighting, shelving, or pictures. Indoor plants, or even botanical-themed wallpaper, are great for adding a touch of greenery and tranquillity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2-choose-the-right-colour-scheme">2. <strong>Choose the right colour scheme</strong></h2>

<p>It&#8217;s essential to make sure that the colour palette you use throughout is cohesive when you&#8217;re decorating your home (so the rooms are sympathetic to each other and don’t ‘fight’), and that you use a natural colour palette – that means try to stick to colours found in nature. If you live in a heritage home, we suggest using natural-based paints, which are made with raw ingredients such as plant extracts, linseed oil, earth minerals and mineral pigments, rather than petrochemical ingredients. When decorating contemporary interiors, richer colours can bring warmth and depth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-create-clever-storage">3. <strong>Create clever storage</strong></h2>

<p>If you’re revamping your interiors in heritage and listed homes with unusual nooks and spaces, bespoke joinery can be the perfect solution for maximising storage or creating display shelving. A clever trick to create the illusion of light and space is to continue the paint colour on the walls on to the woodwork – and even the ceiling (if you’re feeling bold).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-4-design-multifunctional-spaces">4. <strong>Design multifunctional spaces</strong></h2>

<p>Multifunctional spaces are the cornerstone of contemporary interior design. You can create areas that serve multiple purposes through adjustable lighting, or furniture that can be adapted for different uses – perhaps an office sofa that doubles up as a spare bed. Consider a dining room that doubles as a home office, or a living room that seamlessly links to the kitchen or children’s play area. Being versatile in how you use the rooms ensures that every corner is used to its full potential.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-5-choose-functional-furniture">5. <strong>Choose functional furniture</strong></h2>

<p>When you’re choosing furniture, think about the scale of each piece, and how they relate to the other pieces in the room, to keep the overall layout harmonious. Position your furniture items so they don’t restrict movement and enhance the sociability of your home. Large rugs are a good way to define an area in an open-plan space, and seating that has a view, or faces outside, will always improve your mood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ensure a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas by using connective flooring – i.e., using the same wood, stone, or tiles both inside and outside your home. If this is not practical, choose flooring materials in sympathetic colours or textures so they blend together. This will not only look more visually appealing but also make transitioning between the internal and external spaces feel effortless. </p>

<p>You can make sure your outside space remains vibrant and inviting all year round by investing in a variety of plants that thrive in different seasons. Designing a garden scheme that incorporates plants that grow to different heights will draw you deeper into the garden. You can also use planting to create little snugs within the larger spaces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-3-add-water-features">3. <strong>Add water features</strong></h2>



<p>Water features are a great way to add interest to your outdoor space and to create a tranquil spot for zoning out of the hectic day to day. As well as their wellness benefits, water features also attract wildlife, which is great for biodiversity.</p>
