Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Aylesbury

This charming railway museum in West Bucks is a blast from the past with a year-round schedule of events and beautifully restored period buildings.

The Bucks Railway Centre is no stranger to the spotlight. You’ll recognize it from its starring roles as a location on Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders and Taskmaster. But this quirky gem in the village of Quainton near Aylesbury offers more than a camera-ready facade.

To start your journey back in time, the heritage railway has brilliantly preserved buildings dating back to the 1800s, including a signal box, a Victorian station building, and a museum with restored railway exhibits galore. You can also help sort the mail at the travelling post office.

That’s already enough to keep history buffs entertained for hours – but of course the trains are the star of the show here. Across the 25-acre site, there are full-size steam trains and mini ride-on trains, both of which are available to board on steaming days (most Sundays). And if that doesn’t quench your trainspotting thirst, there are also model trains that run throughout the day.

Fun rides aside, Bucks Railway Centre hosts brilliant seasonal events, from rides with Santa to vintage car displays. Check out the full events calendar here. Add to that a children’s playground and a weekday café serving everything from full English brekkies to burgers, and it’s easy to see how time flies by on a day out here. With summer holidays speeding over the horizon, it’s time to hop up here and enjoy the ride. For a more leisurely experience, you can simply enjoy the circular walk around the site, taking in some Chilterns fresh air and views from the footbridges.

It’s not just a great family day out though, as the Bucks Railway Centre is also a stellar events venue for private functions. The visitor centre topped with a period glass roof has been a dreamy backdrop to scores of weddings. It seats 150 but can accommodate 250 if your bash is a strictly dance-floor occasion. Not tying the knot? It’s also a characterful spot for parties and business conferences. Get on board with the events team here.

With so much going on in this charming neck of the woods, it’s full steam ahead.
