Bull, Burford
A stunning restoration and creative reimagining of a country inn by Matthew Freud, Bull in Burford offers a luxury stay surrounded by art, an ex Nobu head chef in the restaurant and one of the Cotswolds’ loveliest towns at your beck and call.
Bull is a boutique sanctuary sitting pretty on Burford high street, the recipient of an impressive refurb by a certain Matthew Freud. The 16th Century former coaching inn offers three communal restaurants, 18 suites and contemporary comfort throughout – think earthy tones, rustic linen, natural rugs, exposed brick and woodwork with art from the likes of Damien Hirst and Harland Miller dotted about.
There are three different types of rooms to choose from – Bull Rooms (cosy), Junior Suites (bigger) and Suites (lounge area and vaulted ceilings). All rooms benefit from king-sized beds, marble-tiled bathrooms and shower as and Wildsmith products.
Food is a total treat here, with three restaurants plus all day grazing in the ‘pantry’. Guests can choose from Hiro, a 10-seater omakase Japanese restaurant with Nobu’s former head chef, Hiromi, at the helm. Then there’s The Wild, a communal feast cooked over flame inspired by Guy Ritchie’s Cashmere Caveman. Lastly there’s The Horn, a 30-seater dining space that acts as the ‘main’ restaurant.
The Bull will eventually have a roster of different creative activities for guests to try, should they wish – everything from choir practice and Padel on the lawn to beekeeping and flower arranging. The idea is these courses draw guests into the transient but vibrant Bull community. Though not compulsory (you can just enjoy the delights of Burford if you wish) it will form part of the five star restorative experience that feels original and exciting.
