Darl-e and the Bear, Woodstock

A bijou, eclectic art gallery that celebrates unique craftsmanship without feeling snooty, and won a 2021 Muddy Award.

Ah yes, one for you culture vultures. Quirky-in-name and quirky-in-nature, the Muddy Award-winning Darl-e and the Bear is a treasure trove of curated indie art and sculpture. There’s constantly changing content, displayed in three galleries across two charming (and Listed) Georgian buildings in fetching Woodstock. And it’s none of your run-of-the-mill stuff: the ethos here is different — environmental consciousness, and a movement away from mainstream manufactured living.

At Number 17 there’s a changing reel of art from local, international and emerging artists, and a really lovely shop where you can buy unusual things to display in your home. At Number 43, you enter through a charming walled garden and into a recently updated gallery room, which hosts various special talks and workshops, as well as more art exhibitions.

Everything’s ethical and sustainable, and there’s a long list of supported charities, but don’t worry, it’s not a saints-only policy: the atmosphere manages to stay chill and welcoming.
