El Cerdo Tapas Bar & Restaurant, Bourne End

Hot off the press! There’s a buzzing new restaurant and bar in town serving authentic Spanish fare– and it’s proving to be hit. Muddy flamenco’d down to Bourne End and entered small plate paradise.

El Cerdo Bourne End

Nestled on the banks of the River Thames and offering a true tapas treat, El Cerdo has hit the authenticity nail right on the head. With 90% of what the restaurant serves imported from Spain, there are veggie, meat and fish options on the menu. The ovens used inside the kitchen have been hand-picked by the Executive Chef and built using the same bricks and techniques as charcoal ovens have been throughout Spanish history, creating ‘ahumado’ (mouth-watering smokiness) for guests to savour.

Classic tapas plates include delicious patatas bravas, melt-in-the-mouth chorizo, chargrilled octopus, and show stopper Pluma Iberica De Bellota (acorn-fed pork marinated and then cooked in a charcoal oven) to name but a few. You’re also spoilt for choice with the drinks options – there are Spanish beers and wines, plus a varied selection of gins (including some local options), cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

Taking inspiration from Spanish style, the place looks great too. The elegant bar is a focal point, visible from all areas of the restaurant and designed with wood and marble. It’s also a great spot to enjoy some small plates too for those on the go. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the water and, in the summer, enjoy the outdoor tables. For cooler months, the terrace is still a great option to enjoy your meal as it is heated and enclosed. A great optional year-round, however when the sun’s shining – you can shut your eyes and pretend you’re in Spain!
