The Granary Deli, Watlington
Muddy says: An award-winning deli, cafe and supper club in the pretty town of Watlington, South Oxon. The online cheese store is particularly impressive, stocking over 140 British and continental cheeses.
Much loved locally, The Granary at No 18 is a charming deli, café, online-cheese store (140 varieties!) and pop up supper club in Watlington, three miles from J6 on the M40.
Robin and Francesca Holmes-Smith, after many years working for large international companies, rescued this ailing food shop in 2002 and since then its become an award-winning foodie emporium (winner of the Muddy Award for Best Deli in 2014), stocking everything from store cupboard essentials to a huge variety of breads, olives and cheeses. Food is sourced locally where possible – breads and croissants from bakers in Oxfordshire, cheeses from Berkshire, cakes are home-baked, quality British wines originate from Brightwell Vineyard in Wallingford, bread flours from Wantage.
The café offers great simple, fresh food made to order – from fresh soups, seasonal salads, bruschetta with smoked duck to sticky toffee pudding – and the last few years has seen it branch successfully into regular monthly three-course supper clubs.
