The Greyhound, Beaconsfield
The award-winning The Greyhound, in Beaconsfield’s Old Town, ticks all the boxes for a contemporary British gastropub. We likey.
The Greyhound in Beaconsfield opened in Dec 2019 with a stellar team at the helm. Owners Daniel Crump (front of house) and wife Margriet (sommelier) have a stellar hospitality CV behind them – the roll call of Michelin starred Petrus in Knightsbridge, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, The Oxford Blue in Old Windsor and Trinity in Clapham – and so there’s an attention to detail at The Greyhound that’s very pleasing.
Describing itself as ‘a comfortable pub and restaurant serving modern British food’ is showing wild modesty – The Greyhound came 22nd in Square Meal’s Top 100 restaurants in 2024, is mentioned in dispatches in The Michelin Guide, and of course won the 2021 Muddy Award for Best Restaurant (proudly displayed in the foyer).
You’ll find the Grade II-listed coaching inn just off the high street in the Old Town, low-ceilinged and beamed but also contemporary and stylish – nothing here takes itself too seriously and it’s visually a lot of fun. The ground floor is the more traditional of the two floors, with a gorgeous circular tan leather banquette, and upstairs is a second, larger space, with another mustard banquette that divides the room, with diners seated on each side.
Foodwise, the à la carte menu is small but perfectly formed with a modern take on classic British food. Options include maitake, poached hake or herb-fed chicken thigh, with ingredients sourced from indie local suppliers where possible with full tasting menus for vegans, vegetarians and omnivores, as well as set lunch menus and à la carte.
