The Royal Oak, Marlow
Muddy says: A fine gastropub just outside Marlow, with lovely gardens for summer and an all-inclusive vibe that invites casual drinkers through to Sunday lunchers and private diners.

I’ve been coming to this gaff for ages and it’s a bit of a hidden gem, literally- it’s up a hill, off the beaten track, a mile or two outside of Marlow. Inside it’s what I’d call heritage chic – exposed brickwork, wooden floors, gorgeous tiling in the bar area, with loads of nooks and crannies and a cosy snug with a wood burning stove. It’s great for summer too with a large garden, groovy teepee that you can hire out for special events and table tennis for the competitive (me! me!).
It’s local ingredients galore here, with a mix of small plates, a la carte and much loved Sunday lunch, offering a more refined take on your classic pub grub. Chef Dave Green, formerly of Soho House, is in charge of what he calls his ‘British Colonial’, supported by sous chef Jonny (ex The Coach).
