The Royal Oak, Marlow
Muddy says: A fine gastropub just outside Marlow, with lovely gardens for summer and an all-inclusive vibe that invites casual drinkers through to Sunday lunchers and private diners.
I’ve been coming to this gaff for ages and it’s a bit of a hidden gem, literally- it’s up a hill, off the beaten track, a mile or two outside of Marlow. Inside it’s what I’d call heritage chic – exposed brickwork, wooden floors, gorgeous tiling in the bar area, with loads of nooks and crannies and a cosy snug with a wood burning stove. It’s great for summer too with a large garden, groovy teepee that you can hire out for special events and table tennis for the competitive (me! me!).
It’s local ingredients galore here, with a mix of small plates, a la carte and much loved Sunday lunch, offering a more refined take on your classic pub grub. Chef Dave Green, formerly of Soho House, is in charge of what he calls his ‘British Colonial’.
