Just over the border into Glos, The Crown at Ampney Brook is a cosy village pub that oozes stylish Cotswold charm. Recently having undergone a stunning restoration, there’s a great buzz about it: a beautiful 16th century inn turned Instagram catnip. It’s set in the village of Ampney Crucis, which is the largest of three ‘Ampneys’ and clustered beside a pretty brook, hence the pub name, with plenty of picturesque countryside surrounding it.

Championing local producers, the pared back, rustic interior is matched with a delicious, seasonal menu. You can watch the chefs in action from the open copper kitchen, where they dish up elevated British food like grilled ribeye, gnocchi with black garlic, and venison cottage pie. Though glossy, the vibe is relaxed: deep comfy sofas and barstools.

If you take the party outside, there’s a cool Argentinian Fire Terrace with fleeces and a firepit for long summer nights, as well as three private dining pods with gorgeous views over the brook. Make a proper weekend of it and stay over at Wild Thyme & Honey, The Crown’s sister boutique hotel and events retreat next door.
