The Double Red Duke, Bicester Village

One of the Cotswold’s most flamboyant gastropubs has gone shopping and brought its signature red and white stripes (and gourmet grub) to Bicester Village. Tempted? Be our guest.

The OG Double Red Duke in Clanfield, near Bampton, is an award-winning bucolic foodie and interiors mecca, and now its stylish little sister is bringing the same brand of cosy, cool Cotswolds charm to the chi chi avenues of Bicester Village. Opened last winter, the new outpost boasts everything we (and numerous celebs) adore about the 17th century coaching inn, from fireside nooks to polished wood-panelled dining rooms and an elegant bar that serves up iconic post-shopping sharpeners. There’s nothing like a Duke dirty martini with a moreish Westcombe cheddar toastie to take the ache out of retail-weary feet.

Cooking over flame is a Double Red Duke speciality, so expect hearty, seasonal dishes straight from the embers and warm hospitality. Stake out a plush velvet banquette for steak night every Tuesday; tuck into a prime cut of aged Hereford beef, chips, salad and a glass of wine for just £20. Or for afternoon tea as it should be, settle in from 3pm for the likes of roast Cotswolds chicken and tarragon finger sandwiches, zingy lemon drizzle and plump fruit scones. All washed down with a pot of the finest loose leaf and perhaps an ice-cold glass of local Hundred Hills English sparkling. A summer terrace is loading too: there’s no better spot to catch the Wimbledon action, fresh pitcher of Pimm’s in reach. It’s so close to the station, it’d be rude not to pop by after work (and parking couldn’t be more convenient).

The vintage and British-made interiors curated by co-owner Georgie Pearlman are the jewel in The Double Red Duke’s crown. Achingly chic décor and delicious dining from noon ‘til night? 10/10, no notes.
