The North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford
Oxford’s worst-kept arts secret, The North Wall blends cutting-edge performance with community spirit and a packed year-round programme.

Hidden away in leafy Summertown, The North Wall Arts Centre is one of Oxford’s coolest cultural spots, though regulars would probably prefer we kept that hush. Equal parts theatre, gallery, creative playground and community hub, this multi-purpose arts venue has become the go-to destination for anyone craving something a little more inspiring than another night scrolling Netflix.
Housed on the grounds of St Edward’s School but run as a public arts centre, The North Wall packs a surprising amount into its beautifully modern space. There’s a flexible 200-seat theatre hosting everything from contemporary drama and live music to fringe previews and big-name comedians (you’ll recognise many from the box), alongside dance and drama studios and a free gallery showcasing contemporary visual art exhibitions that rotate every three weeks.
The programme is wonderfully varied and intentionally diverse, spotlighting fresh voices, boundary-pushing ideas and stories that reflect Oxford’s vibrant multicultural community. One visit might involve experimental theatre or spoken word, the next a family show, live jazz or a comedian you’ve previously only seen sandwiched between adverts on Channel 4.
The North Wall is also passionate about supporting creativity behind the scenes. Its ArtsLab programme nurtures emerging and early-career artists through mentorships, residencies and collaborative opportunities, helping new work flourish in a genuinely supportive environment. There’s also a packed programme of workshops and masterclasses for children, teens and adults, from playwriting and creative writing to improv and theatre-making.
Perhaps the loveliest thing about The North Wall though, is its atmosphere. Despite the impressive programme, it never feels intimidating or overly serious. It’s welcoming, community-minded and full of energy, whether you’re there to see a touring production, browse the gallery or unleash your inner comedian at an improv workshop.
