The Old Shed, Charlbury

So much more than your typical brunch spot, The Old Shed prides itself on bringing together a community, championing local produce and making use of the fantastic surrounding farmlands with amazing family friendly events.

Set in the surrounds of the stunning Cotswolds countryside, The Old Shed may well be just that, but you should see what they’ve done with the place! What was once an old shed on a working farm is now a gorgeous light, bright cafe that champions local produce and suppliers and does an exceptional line in cakes (for the record, it’s the blondie for us every time).

Elsewhere on Banbury Hill Farm, home of The Old Shed, there’s walks, events and outdoorsy activities, but first back to the café. It works whatever the season as there’s ample seating both in and outdoors, and there’s a broad menu for breakfast and lunch along with organic Arabica coffee and a superb line in hot chocolates with all the trimmings. The menu always features seasonal specials, but bellweather favourites include The Shed Burger, the seasonal risotto and the rustic chips.

Beyond the food, there’s plenty to do to work up a hunger. You can explore the farmland where you can see the sheep, donkeys, chickens and Wanda the wondering goat (if she’s not wandered off…). There’s also the gorgeous woodland to romp in along the farm’s permissive footpaths, and at certain times of the year there are themed trails. These have included an easter trail,  farm trail in the summer, Halloween trail in autumn and a light trail in winter. While elsewhere, the quality of these kinds of events can be a bit hit or miss, the attention to detail here is spot-on and always with nature, sustainability and community at the forefront.

Unusually, The Old Shed also offers Disc Golf, a fab activity that’s a little more inclusive than the conventional version and works for multi-generational groups, while also giving you a chance to amble around the gorgeous surrounds of the farm.  For those not in the know, the aim is to land your frisbee in the various baskets positioned around the woodland course – and don’t worry – no experience required.

Aside from the trails and cafe, it’s worth keeping an eye out for some of the ad hoc events put on at The Old Shed, which have included in the past an open air pop-up cinema and a pizza and quiz night. All of which are super inclusive thanks to the disabled access, toilets and baby changing rooms – they even allow you to bring your four legged friends. Basically, The Old Shed ticks all the boxes for a wholesome, fun and foodie day out for the family.
