The Plough, Shiplake
This foodie hotspot near Henley in Oxfordshire featuring traditional charm with a contemporary twist and great seasonal menus
The Plough at Shiplake is a gastropub is full of original charm, with low hung bare beams and brick-surround fireplace, yet cool with contemporary décor. Diners are greeted by a sleek bar where they can order a pint of Marlow Rebellion or perch with a martini while they wait for their table.
Contemporary art on the walls gives the place a modish air but the sofa by the fire and sideboard with vases of flowers gives it a homely feel too. It’s all about attention to detail – low lighting, soft velveteen chairs and upbeat indie music creates a gentle buzz.
Foodies will love the quirky menu, with modern combinations and beautiful presentation, however there’s also enough on the menu for simpler tastes. From à la carte to special set menus and a Sunday set lunch, there are plenty of reasons to visit throughout the week – and the monthly Flight Club (read our review here) is a real highlight, featuring live music, a surprise five-course tasting menu and expert wine pairings.
The diary is only getting more adventurous at The Plough, with cocktail masterclasses, floral workshops and a fashion and styling lunch among the events planned for the coming months.
