The Story Museum, Oxford

This family museum in central Oxford offers magical galleries, immersive family fun, and an exciting schedule of workshops, performances, and clubs.

Hidden down Pembroke Street in central Oxford, close to Westgate shopping centre, this cool family museum pulls no punches in inspiring little minds. It underwent an absolutely mega refurbishment in 2020 (six million quid, casual) and is suitably slick for it: transportive exhibitions, a jam-packed event schedule, and amazing effects.

When we say this museum makes you want to drop everything and become a kid again, we’re not messing around. Immersive galleries currently on offer include Small Worlds (a vibrant space full of picture books and nursery rhymes); City of Stories (a journey through literary Oxford from ancient myths to iconic children’s books); The Whispering Wood (a cool display where every tree tells a different story); and The Enchanted Library, an interactive space that puts you inside the stories. New for this year (from 30 May) is Ka-Boom, a mischievous exhibition all about creating comics.

Not satisfied with dazzling visitors through its immersive displays, The Story Museum puts on a frequent selection of workshops, performances, and clubs — including some things to delight grown-ups as well as kids. Check the full schedule here for details on upcoming events. For planning your visit, it’s worth knowing there’s a buzzy, bright ground floor café with crowd-pleasing options, as well as an all-important gift shop.

Oh, and pop a cork! The Story Museum has just been shortlisted (one of five museums!) for the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year Award 2022. We’re not one bit surprised, seeing as it’s so brilliant.
