<p>It’s easy to spend a day at <strong>Peterley Manor Farm</strong> drifting between the <a href="https://peterleymanorfarm.co.uk/pick-your-own/">PYO </a>fields, the farm shop packed with gastro goodies and the Barn Kitchen, a converted barn oozing rustic charm inside and out. Food-wise expect the best of local produce including meat sourced within 15 miles of the farm, like the slow-cooked Amersham lamb shoulder. But that’s not all. The plant nursery is petite but comprehensive (that’s why you came, remember?) and expert advice is on hand. There’s loads of events too &#8211; check out Yoga in the Yurt, painting classes, dried flower workshops and more.</p>

<p>You know garden centres have reached another level when their dining has an entry in the <em>Michelin Guide</em>. The Yurt is all about seasonal and gorgeous food (a recent dish was celeriac tarte tatin with Jerusalem artichoke, beetroot and cumin relish) so dress like you’re going to Chelsea but without the bunfight. On the horticulture front, if you&#8217;re a little overwhelmed by the choice, book a free consultation &#8211; you can take garden plans along with you and even a soil sample if you want to go full garden geek. <p>This stylish indie garden centre just north of Oxford has got masses going on. Offering Chelsea Flower Show-style inspiration in store with artfully arranged displays that&#8217;ll have you reaching for your wallet, there are also shops galore (think food hall, toys, clothes, home accessories and outdoor furniture) and events (a Webber BBQ centre, kids art shed and dog groomers). You can even hold your child’s birthday party in the (actually quite tasteful) soft-play magic garden with optional Princess appearance. Basically, clear the diary, it&#8217;s going to be a looong day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-toad-hall-henley"><a href="https://www.toadhallgardencentre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Toad Hall</a>, Henley</h2>



<p>Garden machinery has its own little centre at Toad Hall, so if it&#8217;s a new garden toy you&#8217;re after for cutting/clipping/pruning/strimming, then this is your guy. On top of the machines, there&#8217;s a huge plant section including lots of trees and fruit bushes and a massive range of indoor plants. Make some time to say hello to the giant parrots in the pet food section &#8211; though you may need to warn littlies as the screech is ear-splitting. (At least they won&#8217;t want to take one home). </p>

<p>Pop into <strong>Stowe</strong> &#8211; think grand Georgian landscape gardens (250 acres in fact!) and a neoclassical manor house &#8211; but not for the lakes, valleys and temples. Instead, make a beeline for the café and the shop. With cakes baked daily on site and a farm shop stuffed full of equally hard-to-resist home accessories and food gift delights, there’s also the all-important plant centre to help you create a garden to rival Stowe&#8217;s. (Okay, maybe not but we can all dream).</p>

<p><strong>Greys Court</strong>, a country house dating back to the 14th Century with gorgeous walled gardens, boasts the Cowshed: a rustic tea room that was once home to prize-winning Guernsey cows. Once you’ve sampled the menu (the scones are a 10/10), head to the Old Woodshed to browse gifts, books, jewellery and foodie goodies from biscuits to beer. Oh, and plants galore, of course. You can stock up on plant pots, garden accessories and outdoor sculptures and there&#8217;s always a bargain bin of just-gone-over goodies.</p>

<p>Family-owned since 1976, <strong>Burford Garden Co</strong> in the heart of the Cotswolds is a destination in its own right. As well as plenty of plants, trees, garden furniture and accessories, there’s also a curated selection of furniture and art, both contemporary and vintage, alongside a huge range of homewares, clothing and food. With ever-changing displays, Burford is worth a visit at least once a season (Christmas is an event in itself). Oh, and did we mention there’s an award-winning café as well? And if you&#8217;re after a fancy little &#8216;she-shed&#8217;, a studio for the garden or a greenhouse to cultivate your seed-sowing dreams, then look no further than Burford, where you can wander among their rather deluxe range and and try them out for size. </p>

<p>Got the kids in tow? No problem! <strong>Charlbury Garden Centre</strong> has a fab indoor children&#8217;s play area that’ll keep them entertained. It&#8217;s win-win. You&#8217;ll get a bargaining chip and a window of child-free time to chat to plant experts, check out the outdoor furniture and order something yummy in the Gardener’s Retreat restaurant or the Coffee Haven if you need a caffeine hit.</p>

<p>You can choose from a huge selection of plants at <strong>Hillier Garden Centre</strong> in Marlow &#8211; they take up some 10,000 square metres and many are grown by fellow Hillier nurseries to keep the air miles down. Need some respite? There&#8217;s the Mulberry &amp; Thyme Restaurant if you&#8217;re after soups and sandwiches or opt for the good old homemade cake and scones option for an afternoon pick-me-up. No need to book unless you fancy the full afternoon tea shebang, which does require a little forward planning (min 48 hours notice).</p>

<p>When the tea room is called ‘Cotswold View’ and there’s a special section on the website dedicated to ice-cream, you know you’re in for a treat. With an outdoor terrace and views across the rolling hills towards Shipston-on-Stour and Stratford-upon-Avon, it’s a peachy spot for lunch and garden planning. Run by the Wyatt family, the farm shop stocks fresh local produce, plus interesting gifts, accessories and wildlife products. A visit isn’t complete without sampling the eponymous artisan ice-cream, made on the premises and available in 21 flavours (decisions, decisions). Take your ice-cream cone with you and visit the nearby ancient site of the <a href="https://www.rollrightstones.co.uk/">Rollright Stones </a>while you’re out and about.</p>

<p>This place has had quite the glow-up in recent years and now has a huge outdoor furniture area as well as another room of indoor plants and pots. Alongside that, there&#8217;s the extensive tools, equipment and wildlife gubbins as well as the plants and trees. They&#8217;re also super friendly here if you feel a little lacking in the green-fingered department. The café is really reasonable and has an extensive home-cooked menu. Plus there&#8217;s a series of mini show-gardens alongside it offering a horticultural look-book while you sip your coffee.</p>

<p><strong>Crocus at Dorney Court</strong> near Bray has everything you need for summer living: outdoor furniture, fire pits, BBQs and lighting – plus oodles of plants, of course. The indoor and outdoor plant offering is highly comprehensive, and then there’s the gorgeous café, which has wooden floors, whitewashed beams and plants hanging from the ceiling. The menu includes burgers, risotto, sandwiches and more. The coffee is from a family-run roastery in Dorset and the beer is from the Rebellion brewery in Marlow. Enjoy!</p>
