<p>Netflix&#8217;s new romantic comedy, <em>My Oxford Year</em>, a swoony adaptation of Julia Whelan’s bestselling novel. <p>It’s&nbsp;July,&nbsp;the rose’s flowing, and honestly? Our brains are too&nbsp;sun-soaked&nbsp;for&nbsp;anything gritty. Enter Netflix, stage left, with something light, lovely and full of beautiful people gazing wistfully across ancient quads.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p><em>My Oxford Year</em>&nbsp;is the&nbsp;new&nbsp;glossy new romcom adapted from the bestselling novel by Julia Whelan. It&nbsp;drops on 1 Aug, and it’s already giving us major&nbsp;<em>Emily in Academia</em>&nbsp;energy.</p>

<p>With the cobbled charm of Oxford as its backdrop,&nbsp;(yes, real Oxford – we’re talking Magdalen cloisters, medieval libraries and the odd pint at the Turf Tavern), this one’s got Brit Corey&nbsp;Mylchreest&nbsp;(best known as King George in Bridgerton<em>:&nbsp;</em>Queen Charlotte),&nbsp;an overachieving American scholarship student, played by&nbsp;<em>Purple Hearts’</em>&nbsp;Sofia Carson,&nbsp;and enough swoony glances to make even the most jaded English grad swoon.</p>



<p>So,&nbsp;what’s it all about? Are the floppy-haired stereotypes going to make us cringe into our G&amp;Ts? And who was spotted filming in a real Oxford pub at 7am on a Tuesday? Here’s everything we know so far.</p>

<p>Ambitious American Anna scores a scholarship to Oxford&nbsp;and&nbsp;just as she’s getting into the swing of spires and Shakespeare, she falls for her impossibly handsome tutor, Jamie. Life plans are questioned, hearts are bruised, and there’s&nbsp;<em>a lot</em>&nbsp;of poetry.</p>



<p>It’s romance with a side of existential angst, all framed by the dreamy architecture and intellectual posing of Britain’s most famous university. Prepare for stolen glances in Bodleian stairwells, tears in the Rad Cam, and at least one dramatic rain-soaked confession.</p>

<p>Front and centre is&nbsp;Sofia Carson, who not only stars,&nbsp;but also exec-produces. She apparently avoided visiting Oxford beforehand so she could have “genuine first-time reactions” on camera&nbsp;–&nbsp;method acting, but&nbsp;in a gown and heels.</p>



<p>Her love interest is&nbsp;Corey&nbsp;Mylchreest, breakout star of&nbsp;<em>Queen Charlotte</em>, bringing floppy-haired charm, literary brooding and what we&#8217;re promised is a “layered” performance. There’s also&nbsp;Dougray Scott,&nbsp;Catherine McCormack,&nbsp;Poppy Gilbert&nbsp;(<em>Stay Close</em>),&nbsp;Harry&nbsp;Trevaldwyn, and rising star&nbsp;Esmé Kingdom.</p>

<p>Netflix didn’t scrimp on authenticity&nbsp;–&nbsp;the film was shot on location across Oxford last autumn, with scenes at&nbsp;Magdalen College,&nbsp;St Hugh’s,&nbsp;Hertford, and a cameo from the&nbsp;Merton Street Wine Bar.</p>



<p>A few key moments were also shot in&nbsp;Windsor, but most of the action takes place under Oxford’s honey-coloured stone,&nbsp;giving&nbsp;this renowned city&nbsp;its glossiest close-up since college TikTok tours became a thing.</p>

<p>Plenty. Filming apparently started at dawn to beat the student foot traffic, and locals spotted Carson doing takes outside college gates in full formalwear&nbsp;–&nbsp;heels and all&nbsp;–&nbsp;before breakfast. Corey was seen at&nbsp;The Turf, chatting to actual Oxford students (charm levels unreasonably high).</p>



<p>There’s also talk of real students being roped in as extras.&nbsp;Keep your eyes peeled for suspiciously fresh-faced philosophers lingering in the background.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-we-going-to-cringe-at-the-stereotypes">Are we going to cringe at the stereotypes?</h2>



<p>Probably. There’s already online chatter about the “adorable American discovers tea” trope, and we’ve seen the teaser&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;there’s&nbsp;definitely a&nbsp;floppy-haired tutorial moment or two.&nbsp;Still, Carson and&nbsp;Mylchreest&nbsp;manage to give the script some actual emotional weight — early whispers suggest it’s more&nbsp;<em>About Time</em>&nbsp;than&nbsp;<em>Hallmark: Oxford Edition</em>.<br>Also: yes, there’s a poetry scene. No, we’re not mad about it.</p>
