Much more than a museum, it offers 45 acres of countryside to explore, hands-on activities and a packed programme of family events.</p>



<p>By week two of the summer holidays, even the most organised parents are starting to run low on ideas. And energy. The novelty has worn off, the snack budget has doubled and somehow your children are simultaneously bored<em> and</em> bouncing off the walls. <p>Of course, the best family attractions aren&#8217;t just designed for children. Parents want value for money and a decent café. Grandparents want something interesting to see. Everyone wants fresh air, space to roam and somewhere that doesn&#8217;t involve queueing for an hour before handing over £20 for a distinctly underwhelming sandwich and a lukewarm coffee. </p>



<p>Fortunately, Chiltern Open Air Museum delivers on all fronts. Children can race off to the playground, hunt for wildlife, explore woodland trails or roam between historic buildings and living history displays. <p>One of the summer highlights is Heritage Crafts Weekend on <strong>25 and 26 July</strong>. Yes, really. In an age when children can watch someone build a house, forge a sword or restore a tractor on YouTube in under 30 seconds, there&#8217;s something rather magical about seeing real craftsmanship happen right in front of them.</p>



<p>Across the museum, skilled artisans will be demonstrating everything from blacksmithing, chair making and woodturning to rope making, spinning, pottery, stone carving and spoon carving. Visitors can watch traditional skills in action, chat to the makers and discover how everyday objects were created long before mass production, online shopping and next-day delivery became the norm.</p>



<p>Set among the museum&#8217;s historic buildings and leafy woodland surroundings, it&#8217;s a fascinating glimpse into a world where people made, repaired and reused rather than simply replacing things at the click of a button.</p>



<p>And while the children are busy discovering how a blacksmith&#8217;s forge works, you may find yourself quietly wondering whether we&#8217;ve perhaps become a little too reliant on Amazon Prime.</p>

<p>If your children think history is something that only exists in textbooks and classrooms, Britain at War may come as something of a surprise. On <strong>8–9 Aug</strong>, the museum is transformed by everyone from medieval warriors and Napoleonic soldiers to Churchill and home front volunteers, bringing centuries of British history vividly to life.</p>



<p>Expect living history camps, military displays, 1940s music and plenty of opportunities to get involved. Younger visitors can enlist in the WWI Soldier School, while parents can enjoy the increasingly rare pleasure of hearing their children voluntarily ask questions about history. Best of all, it doesn&#8217;t feel like a lesson. It feels like stepping into the past for the day. And who knows? You might even learn a thing or two yourself — although perhaps don&#8217;t tell the children that was the plan all along.</p>

<p>There are also opportunities to try everything from pond dipping and fire lighting to scarecrow making, giving children plenty of chances to get stuck in, get creative and burn off some of that seemingly limitless summer-holiday energy.</p>
