Expect beautifully presented cakes, moreish cocktails and a good dollop of festive cheer. Young guests will delight in their own perfectly presented three-tiered cake stand, and there&#8217;s plenty on offer to tickle your fancy too.</p>

<p>Afternoon tea HQ is Harry&#8217;s Bar, the hotel&#8217;s main restaurant. It&#8217;s been styled out elegantly for Christmas and has a relaxed, unpretentious feel (but do have a poke around the main house if you&#8217;d like to see some really decadent décor). There’s no hushed formality here, just a lovely hum of action, so whether you’re lingering over scones with friends or entertaining excitable little ones between sweet treats, everything feels easy, warm and effortless.</p>

<p>The afternoon tea is classic meets seasonal indulgence. Savoury finger sandwiches are seasonal but not OTT: smoked salmon with cream cheese, roast turkey and stuffing, pork belly and cranberry sausage roll, plus a retro egg mayo. Then come the tower of scones: warm, fluffy plain and fruit versions served with strawberry conserve and proper Cornish clotted cream. Sweet treats lean fully into the festive brief with mince pie crumble tart, chocolate yule log, chestnut and sour cherry crémeux, and orange and pistachio financier — rich, varied and beautifully presented without tipping into sickly territory. </p>

<p>I could easily have devoured more sour cherry crémeux and it was a pleasure to meet the pastry chef (and culinary genius) <a href="https://bucksoxon.muddystilettos.co.uk/life/people/whats-cooking-pastry-genius-dilip-kumara-horwood-house/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dilip Kumara</a>, who has brought his experience in the luxury hospitality sector over from Dubai to delight lucky us here in Bucks. </p>



<p>The children’s tea mirrors the grown-up experience perfectly, with turkey, sausage rolls, scones and festive puds all landing on their own mini three-tiered stand. It skips the more sophisticated sour cherry and smoked salmon (more for me!). My four-year-old daughter was thrilled; she&#8217;s a fussy eater but put away most of the scones, cakes and sandwiches. She loved the hot chocolate too, which wasn&#8217;t a great surprise. She also opted to eat all of the jam with her fingers, but the staff saw no issue with this; she was fussed over no end. </p>

<p>Tea lovers will be in heaven at Horwood – you can opt for English Breakfast, Earl Grey, peppermint, lemon and ginger, fruity cranberry blends or a green tea if you&#8217;re feeling virtuous. Coffee drinkers are covered too and for festive sipping, cocktails are on hand to elevate proceedings, as well as a decent selection of mocktails. I went trad with a glass of crisp prosecco – always a perfect afternoon tea partner I find. </p>
