Review: The Beauty Studio, Jericho, Oxford
How to lose a decade on the face in an hour? Karolina at The Beauty Studio in Oxford knows, and Muddy has been a very willing recipient!
As a teen in the 1980s, SPF and a decent skin regime weren’t high on my agenda. I was listening to Wham!, plastering on Hawaiian Tropic Coconut Oil (Factor 0) and basting myself nicely in the midday sun. A bit like a roast chicken. My skin lives to tell the tale so when I heard about therapist Karolina Lipinska and the skin analysis she offers at The Beauty Studio, I was keen to give it a try.
The Beauty Studio is tucked away (by this, I mean it’s behind a completely unremarkable door in a completely unremarkable wall) in bohemian Oxford outpost Jericho, just north of the city centre. And happily, it’s in close vicinity to much-loved Italian eatery Branca where I could pick up a strong cappuccino on the way.
The studio shares its home with other businesses, so do not expect a pristinely white, candle-dappled waiting room – although the communal space is perfectly comfortable. Once inside Karolina’s studio, you find yourself faced with two rooms; one for treatments and one for skin analysis. And it’s important to stress the importance of the science here as it’s fundamental to The Beauty Studio’s offer.
Karolina uses Environ products, created by world-leading plastic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes (seriously, that’s his name!) who produced the range for his skin cancer patients. The Environ motto is ‘Feed, Fortify and Finish’ which gives a good indication as to what you should expect. This is not a facial where you are gently massaged with essential oils while lolling around in a fluffy robe: this is all about getting serious results. For anyone nudging the wrong side of thirty and onwards, that’s what it’s all about.
Karolina is reassuringly knowledgeable and takes what she does seriously. She has an impressive CV with several years spent at the spas at Esporta and Virgin Active and eight years ago, in her early twenties, set up The Beauty Studio, which aside from skincare, offers waxing and lash treatments too. But just in the first few minutes of us chatting, I’m taken by her in-depth understanding of skincare and nutrition. She’s clearly passionate about Environ products, their incredible efficacy and the brand’s eco, cruelty-free and vegan credentials.
Firstly, we sit down and talk about which products could work on my – quite frankly – tired and blotchy skin. Karolina decides that a Collagen Facial would be best and tells me that day three post-treatment is when clients’ partners are most likely to see results (although I wonder if my husband will be that observant.)
She begins with a thorough double cleanse and I wish I could tell you what happened next but to my absolute shame, I wake myself up at the end of the treatment by snoring. But Karolina informs me the process began with a toner and application of Environ’s serum peptide. A sonic probe was passed over my face to create channels allowing the serum to be absorbed (or as Karolina described it: “hammer the serum into the dermis”). An algae mask was applied to oxygenate the serum and lock in moisture. This was then followed by primer and BB cream by Jane Iredale.
Refreshed and glowing, I then underwent the skin analysis. My face was photographed, clearly showing the problem areas, allowing Karolina to tailor-make a skincare programme. And brilliantly, she saves your before and after pictures so you can see how patches of dehydration, excess oil and pigmentation are being improved over time. Needless to say, I was thrilled with the results. I felt my skin had greater elasticity and the tone was more even. And while my husband (predictably) didn’t notice my BRAND NEW FACE on day three, I was convinced I glowed for at least a week.
The skin consultation is freeeeee! My Collagen facial (1 hour) was £90. Full list of prices.
