<p>Tucked between Didcot and Wallingford, Brightwell cum Sotwell has a ‘middle-of-nowhere’ feel and yet it’s just minutes from your pick of buzzy market towns and only 40 mins from Oxford city centre. You might even spot a certain mop-haired celeb down at the local; Boris and Carrie Johnson snapped up the nine-bedroom Brightwell Manor two years ago and are raising their growing brood in this picture-perfect village.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>You’ll find the <a href="https://www.redlionbcs.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Lion</a> (what else?) smack-bang in the centre of the village. Expect satisfying pub grub from this 16<sup>th</sup> century inn, complete with thatched roof and oak-beamed ceilings (order the garlic prawns and steak &amp; ale pie). And come Sunday it’s all about the sacred roast – piled high, lashings of gravy, Yorkshire puds the size of your head. </p>



<p>It’s less than 10 mins to North Moreton and Wallingford where you’ll find gastropubs galore, including <a href="https://www.thebearofnorthmoreton.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bear of North Moreton</a>, <a href="https://www.fivelittlepigs.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Five Little Pigs</a>, and elevated ‘surf-and-turf’ at <a href="https://shellfishcow.co.uk/wallingford" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shellfish Cow</a>. If carbs are calling, it’s only 25 mins to Watlington, where the insta-famous <a href="https://www.instagram.com/the_orangebakery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Orange Bakery</a> is open on Saturdays from 10am, with fresh focaccia and sweet and savoury buns.  </p>

<p>Tucked behind the hall are volunteer-run stores filled with incredible local produce, from eggs, honey and freshly roasted coffee beans, to meat and Oxfordshire wine and cheese. There’s also a post office and dry-cleaning service.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>There are plenty of charming independent stores in nearby Wallingford too. Historic fashion boutique <a href="https://pettitsofwallingford.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pettits</a> has been keeping locals impeccably dressed since 1856. Need a hat with that outfit? <a href="https://louiseclairemillinery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Louise Claire Millenary</a> is just up the road. Green thumbs are catered for at <a href="https://root-one.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Root One</a> garden centre, you can even book a wine tasting at <a href="https://www.brightwellvineyard.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brightwell Vineyard</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lycra at the ready! You can cycle from Brightwell cum Sotwell all the way to Oxford and back again (1 hr 15 mins each way) almost entirely avoiding the roads, making it great fun for the whole family. This small village is overflowing with sports’ clubs, from cricket (of course) and golf, to tennis, pickleball and youth football. Align those chakras at the <a href="https://www.silverwoodyogastudio.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Silverwood Yoga Studio</a>, or head to Wallingford for your pick of hair and beauty shops. Furry friends aren’t forgotten either, with a two-acre fully enclosed <a href="https://www.brightwellvineyard.co.uk/pooch-paddock.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pooch Paddock</a> bookable by the hour for walks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There’s quirky community spirit by the bucket load, starting in January with the ancient Wassailing ceremony, when villagers wake up the apple trees with songs and fireworks. <a href="https://www.brightfest.org.uk/program" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brightfest music festival</a> is a weekend of food and jams that raises funds for local projects, while <a href="https://bunkfest.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wallingford Bunkfest</a> winds up the season with a free family festival on the banks of the Thames. In between there are summer fetes, vintage car days and pub nights galore. Eight minutes away is the independent <a href="https://www.wallingfordbookshop.co.uk/book-club" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wallingford Bookshop</a>, which runs a book club on the last Monday of the month and homewares store <a href="https://www.wildwoodwallingford.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wildwood Wallingford</a> holds regular macrame workshops, so there’s loads of ways to make new friends.  </p>

<p>Get those walking boots on, because you’re spoiled for choice here. There are grassy fields to tramp in every direction, and the <a href="https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/trails/thames-path/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thames Path</a> winds along the nearby villages of Goring and Culham. Circle the famous Wittenham Clumps (grassy hills with amazing views across the countryside), or enjoy the shady solitude of Little Wittenham Woods.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Don’t be fooled by the sleepy rural surroundings, this village oozes sophistication. It’s less than 30 mins to <a href="https://garsingtonopera.org/seasons/2025-festival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Garsington Opera</a>, and a few minutes further to the heart of Oxford. <a href="https://bachcentre.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bach Centre</a> was the home of Dr Edward Bach and his famous flower remedies; today it’s an education centre that welcomes visitors. <a href="https://www.wallingfordbookshop.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wallingford Bookshop</a> also has a packed events calendar than includes regular author meet and greets. They also run the <a href="https://www.fivelittlepigs.co.uk/shop/p/the-five-little-pigs-cookbook-club" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cookbook Club</a>, alongside Michelin-recommended restaurant Five Little Pigs, where a popular cookbook is picked and the recipes are replicated. </p>

Parents also opt to send their children to <a href="https://www.mcsoxford.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Magdalen College School</a> (boys, but sixth form is co-ed), 30 mins away, and <a href="https://www.abingdon.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Abingdon Senior School</a> (co-ed from next year) 25 mins away. <a href="http://www.cranfordschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cranford School</a> is an independent school in Moulsford, 15 mins drive away, and takes children from pre-school right through to sixth form.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret-nbsp">BEST KEPT SECRET&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Wallingford Beach is a sandy stretch just downstream from the Wallingford bridge. The waters are usually calm, but it gets crowded in summer. For those in-the-know, Clifton Hampden, 12 mins north-west of Brightwell cum Sotwell, is the swimming place to be, with small gravelly beaches dropping into the usually calm waters. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute-nbsp">COMMUTE&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Thirty minutes’ drive to Oxford (13 miles), or 1 hr 45 mins drive to central London (50 miles). The nearest train station is a 15 min drive at Didcot Parkway, from there it’s a quick 40 mins into London Paddington.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
