<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



<p>A ‘restaurant to your door’ Texas BBQ feast, delivered neatly packaged and chilled on a Friday so you can devour it anytime over the weekend. Generic cobbled together recipe box this isn’t – <a href="https://worldfeast.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">WorldFeast</a> founder Ben Ramsdale is a Bucks boy from <a href="https://bucksoxon.muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/buckinghamshire/brill/">Brill </a>whose team cooks out of a kitchen in Wheatley, 5 miles east of Oxford, using predominantly local producers. All of the (plentiful) meat you’ll eat is sourced from his local butcher and the cornbread and brioche buns are made by a bakery just down the road. So technically, as <a href="https://bucksoxon.muddystilettos.co.uk/things-to-do/latest-news/wigginton-oxfordshire-guide-beyonce/">Beyoncé </a>would say, this ain’t Texas, but stick around because you could have fooled us.</p>

<p>Ramsdale chose a Texas BBQ theme for his WorldFeast debut (South Asian, Mexican and Afghan menus are all in the works) after quitting his board-level role at a tech company in the City and taking his family on a meaty trip around Texas. He tried some mighty fine BBQ on his travels and the Texas BBQ Feast serves up authentic classics like brisket, saucy spare ribs and pulled pork using high welfare British reared meat.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Mourning the loss of the traditional family butchers near his childhood Oxfordshire home and in Oxford’s Covered Market, Ramsdale&#8217;s WorldFeast is partly rooted in bigging up trusted community suppliers, but also in championing multiculturalism – Texas BBQ is a fusion of Native American, Mexican and German and Czech cuisines. If this all sounds a bit holier than thou, fear not, because a Texas BBQ experience is an at-home hoedown that’s a hell of a lot of fun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A date night/ dinner party barn dance, with everything taken care of. I’m listening to the WorldFeast Texas BBQ Spotify playlist as I type&nbsp; – there’s a QR code in the menu guide that takes you straight to Ramsdale’s personally-curated country music soundtrack and it’s full of bangers. That brisket will practically line dance itself into the oven.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Speaking of which, the cooking instructions are idiot-proof and well considered. Everything goes in at the same temperature so there’s no Christmas Day-esque chaos juggling the meat and sides, and it’s all done in 40 minutes. There’s a QR code linking to a video of Ramsdale in virtual host mode too, but the menu cards are clear enough that you can easily go screen-free if you prefer. We chose to skip the vid because it was a little too reminiscent of lockdown dinner parties for our liking, but it&#8217;s a nice touch. </p>



<p>Completing the QR code trinity, there’s one that whizzes you to info about how to recycle and compost all the packaging too. On that, I was stunned at how stealthily the entire feast fitted into the fridge when it arrived. It’s the kind of flatpack that IKEA would be proud of. As meal boxes go, this one’s smart and it’s got heart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

<p>Free cocktails are always a good start to an evening and the complimentary margaritas had us at ‘howdy’. There are other classics to choose from and you could add on Ramsdale’s BBQ matched wines or Bristolian beers too to save nipping to the shops. </p>



<p>Our BBQ box couldn’t have landed at a better time: right after my husband completed an endurance race, so he swapped protein shakes for no fewer than four different varieties of meat. Veggies do get a look-in too; the <a href="https://worldfeast.co.uk/products/texas-meat-free-feast" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">vegetarian Texas BBQ feast box </a>stays true to the theme with cauliflower ‘brisket’, pulled jackfruit and corn cob ribs.</p>

<p>Back to the meat. We chose a lean cut of salt and pepper brisket which was flame cooked over a traditional Texan oak wood smoker for 12-14 hours before it got to us. All we had to do was pop it in foil in the oven before it was joined by glazed spare ribs, pulled pork and jalapeño and cheddar sausage (all of which are also slow cooked first for maximum succulence and smokiness).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then came the carbs: a brioche bun as a vehicle for the pulled pork, with house pickles for some tang, a garlicky potato salad, nutmeg mac ‘n’ cheese topped with breadcrumbs and a slice of cornbread to mop up all the meat juices. At this point I considered that perhaps I too should have signed up for some kind of fitness challenge beforehand, but we move (or, in my case, don’t).&nbsp;</p>



<p>That’s not even your lot. There’s ‘esquites’, a cold Mexican corn mix with lime, coriander,&nbsp; jalapeños, cheese and mayo (not quite what I’d describe as a light side salad) and smoky pit beans, which sadly I couldn’t try due to an intolerance but they involve Nduja and butter so they’re not rabbit food either. My husband, who’s been known to get up at 4am to tend to his own brisket and who also hails from a family of chefs, deemed the feast “truly excellent”, which, believe me, is the highest of praise. Not being a ferocious meat eater myself, I was most impressed by the delicate but not mushy ribs and moreish pulled pork. All of the sides were superb but I did squeeze some extra lime into the corn for a hint more freshness. </p>

<p>Rather staggeringly, desserts are on the menu too, but we were so stuffed that we had to leave the biscuit crumb dusted banana pudding (sweet, but packed with real banana) and pecan cobbler (one for sticky toffee fans) until the next day. Even then, they were so rich that lasted us into the next week, as did the meat. This is a Friday night dinner that just keeps on giving.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Yes, the meal will fill many hungry tummies. It’s low effort for you and kids can assemble a plate themselves (probably minus the pickles). They’ll be bouncing around to the playlist too. They might be bouncing off the walls after those desserts too so pace yourself. </p>

<p>Fido would love to get a look in on the brisket but that’s on you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for: </strong>A slice of hearty Texas fare that’s straight out of Bucks &amp; Oxon and supports local businesses. Also, just an alternative night in when you fancy something jazzier than a takeaway but don’t want to take off your trackies. We’re excited to taste what’s next.&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>Vegans, those on a health kick or anyone having midweek meat cravings – feast boxes are only available for Friday delivery at the moment. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-damage">THE DAMAGE</h2>



<p>£95 for a Texas Whole Hog Feast (feeds min 3 people), or £75 for a slightly slimmed down take for two. You can size up with a Texas Beast Feast for £125 (feeds min 4 people), while a Veggie Feast for 2 is £60. There&#8217;s also a multibuy discount available to keep price per head down if you&#8217;re catering for a larger gathering. The feast box comes in at roughly the same as a mid-priced meal out, but with the perk of your sandwiches taken care of for the week.&nbsp;</p>
