WHAT? WHERE?

Nestled in an epic 800 acres in a quiet, South Oxfordshire village, in a handsome red-brick, largely Victorian site, dating back to 1847, Radley College is one of only three remaining all boys, full boarding schools in the UK.

With 770 pupils from 13-18 years old, 15% of whom are international boarders, the school ranks with Eton, Harrow and Winchester in the elite band of English boarding schools where names are put down at birth and places can be hard to come by. That said, Radley is taking great strides in widening its cohort through the Open Entry scheme (apply in Y6) and an enticing funded places programme that will see 20% of all places offered to those otherwise unable to pay the fees.

Radley’s reputation has historically been that of a good ‘all-rounder school’, and with pupil numbers around half those of Eton and 15% smaller than Harrow, it retains a sense of smallness and intimacy despite its acreage. That’s also borne out in class sizes, averaging 22 (Y9-11) and 6-14 (Sixth Form), depending on subjects. However, as a business and brand Radley College is growing, with seven Prep Schools (Barfield, Beeston Hall, Chandlings, Cothill, Kitebrook, Mowden Hall and West Hill Park) in its newly formed Radley Schools Group.

FACILITIES

Any school that charges £60,336 a year had better have some incredible facilities and Radley College steps straight up onto the podium with this one.

SPORT

Radley College is a sporty school, no question about that, and whatever you want to do, there’s a good chance Radley has it covered. Rugby is the main sport here, the distinctive cherry and white hoops of the school fielding up to 23 teams on a single day – for ‘Shells’ in their first year, it’s non-negotiable, but there are options to play non-contact formats of the game. Aside from the 12 full rugby pitches, there’s a huge, stylish fitness suite for conditioning (loving those enormous windows looking out onto the Oxfordshire hills).

Rowing has grown massively in popularity at Radley – the boys who took me around pondered whether it was now the number one sport here. The school has its own boathouse on the Thames and a state-of-the-art rowing tank with a camera system that records boys’ technique from all angles.

Cricket is to the fore in the summer term and boys have 19 set of nets to hone their craft ahead of the season. Radley’s newly appointed cricket pro Billy Godleman spent 17 years as a professional having also been mentored by the legendary “Wags” (Radley’s recently retired pro of over 40 years) who coached former England captain and Old Radleian Andrew Strauss, so the boys are in safe hands.

There are three full-sized astroturfs for hockey and lacrosse (yes, they field a team), five squash courts, an athletics track, football pitches, cricket squares, rackets and tennis courts, and particularly impressive is the 25m six-lane swimming pool, with its own diving pit – 3.5m deep, with two diving boards for anyone wishing to channel their inner Olympic knitter.

Fancy a go at Real Tennis? Radley has one of only five school courts in the country, with ex-world-champ Chris Ronaldson handily installed as head coach although padel is also now taking hold with with 200 boys playing every Sunday at a local club.

And in the strongest nod to the mind-boggling land at Radley’s disposal, you’ll also find a fishing lake, countryside centre and a nine-hole golf course on site here.

PERFORMING ARTS

With sport so central to Radley you might feel your creative, artsy son won’t be catered for, but my sense was very much that arts are a big deal here; and with the boys boarding there’s a lot of encouragement to get stuck into all elements of school life.

Fanfare those trumpets – the big headline is that a new Music School officially opened in March 2026. But if you’re imagining a few extra instrument practice spaces and teaching rooms, think again my friend, because Radley has blasted a cool £9m at this project. A reimagining and expansion of the existing music space, it includes a 350 seat recital hall, a second 100 seat recital space and the kind of blingy triple height foyer that Saudi princes only dream of.

Clearly this will supercharge music at Radley which is seen by the governing body as the final piece of the jigsaw in terms of the College’s first class facilities. I’ll go in as soon as it’s finished and feed back here, but it’s not much of a punt to think that it will be pretty spectacular.

All that said, music as it currently exists at Radley is far from slouchy, with a 130 strong Chapel Choir, a Symphony Orchestra, numerous ensembles and over 500 music lessons every week in instruments as broad as bagpipes, harpsichord, drums, euphonium and organ (three boys were offered organ scholarships to Oxbridge recently, FYI). The boys can even take lessons in DJing and – but of course – Radley also has is own record label.

In terms of Drama, the school has a strong reputation, with the facilities to support it, offering both a 400 seat theatre and a smaller ‘black box’ drama space. Surprisingly, drama is not a subject lesson in the first year, but an extra curricular choice, but there’s no doubting the depth here – 13 of the boys gained places at the National Youth Theatre last year. For mini Shakespeares in the making, it’s worth noting that Radley has just been offered a partnership with the National Theatre on its ‘New Views’ programme which gives young people the chance to be mentored by a professional playwright.

For arty boys, The Sewell Gallery, a purpose-built gallery built on site in 2014, hosts six contemporary art shows a year and is open to Radley pupils and the general public – the likes of Tracey Emin, Bridget Riley and Eduardo Paolozzi have had works exhibited here over the last few years. Paintings and sculptures created by boys fill every wall and there’s art dotted in the grounds too. DT is also a very popular subject here with some seriously impressive kit.

SCHOOL

Radley has seen enormous investment and expansion over the last 20 years, so you’ll find a series of modern buildings dotted around the campus that house dedicated subject areas – for example, the distinctive circular Queen’s Court, opened by you-guessed-it in 1997, is home to Maths, Economics, Biology, Geography and Geology. Somehow Radley manages to feel both grand and quite intimate – the main part of the campus is quite easy to walk around and the buildings feel like a connected network.

The original Radley Hall building, from 1720, is used mostly for staff and office work (lucky staff), but central to school life is the Chapel, built in 1895 by Sir Thomas Jackson, where the boys attend a service 4 nights a week. The boys tell me this contributes to a real sense of togetherness and community that you really feel as you walk around the place. The Chapel completed a sympathetic extension in 2023 complete with new organ so all boys can easily fit in the building. Opposite the Chapel, across the Quad is the Harry Potter-esque Hall where all meals are eaten together.

The library, above, had an overhaul in 1996 and another rejig in 2025 to provide more desks. The boys who took me around seemed particularly proud of it. Handy that there’s a slick coffee shop adjacent to the Sewell Gallery that all pupils can pillage at their leisure.

SIXTH FORM

It’s possible to join in the Sixth Form here, but be warned, there are only 15-20 places available so places are at a premium. A neatly designed curriculum extension programme is timetabled for Sixth Formers so they can flex their intellectual muscles by studying Chinese or international relations, and those with entrepreneurial ambitions can study for a Mini MBA.

ACADEMICS

The academic entry requirements for Radley are less onerous than the moon-skimming heights required by Eton and Winchester – but with 10% of Radley kids heading off to Oxbridge and 89% going to Russell Group universities, seriously who cares? Class sizes are small with an average of roughly 16 boys up to GSCE and eight for A-Levels. Subjects here are largely traditional – aside from the usuals, you’ll find Latin, Classical Civilisation, Classical Greek, Computer Science, Geology and Electronics are all on the table for GSCE – but if you have knowledge of particular language (Chinese seems popular) you’re able to study that for GSCE.

Exam results for 2025 were strong for Radley. Twelve boys secured Oxbridge offers and 15 pupils managed at least three A* grades. All 2025 grades below.

A-LEVEL: 59% achieved A*-A and 87% made the grade at A*-B. If your son likes Further Maths (I mean, who doesn’t), you’ll be pleased to know it was a 100% A*-A cohort.

GCSE: 38% Grade 9, 67% Grades 9-8, 78%, Gradss 9-7 86%. A mind-boggling 27 boys achieved nine 9s this year.

PASTORAL CARE

In a full boarding school pastoral care is in the spotlight and perhaps an advantage for Radley here is its relatively small cohort. Each boarding house (or ‘Social’) has a dedicated pastoral team – the house master (or ‘Social Tutor’), resident assistant house master (‘Sub-Tutor) and matron (‘Pastoral Housemistress’). The senior boys mentor the new boys and settle them in. Beyond this structure, there’s a counsellor who comes in twice a week and the school also works with a psychiatrist when necessary.

BOARDING

Pretty flash, as boarding goes. All kids from their second year onwards have their own rooms, though in the first or ‘Shell’ year, the boys share a large dorm with their own personal ‘cubicles’ – the smart idea being that they have privacy of course, but they’re not alone, and feel part of their year group. There are 11 boarding houses or ‘Socials’ (A-L), all recently renovated and infinitely slicker than the boarding houses I usually come across – see below.

No surprise that the Socials are competitive with each other, but with the shared dining hall space, the ability to pop into other Socials as they wish, and the physical proximity of the buildings, the boys seem to mingle well.

Also worth you knowing that the traditional exeat system remains in place at Radley – two exeats home for the weekend per term, one either side of half term; more rigid than the majority of other boarding schools. That said, boys can take two ‘privis’ per term to spend time with family and friends; they choose which weekends they’d like to do this, leaving after games on Saturday and returning on Sunday evening.

THE HEAD

John Moule became the 18^th Warden of Radley in Sept 2014, inheriting, as he saw it, a happy school, but one that needed a shot of dynamism, a more global outlook, a more diverse cohort and a lot more independent thought. This vision has come together neatly with Moule’s scholarship programme which currently offers 16 funded places across each year group (80 in total within the school) but the ambition is much bigger than this, and to fill 20% of the school with these children – smart, ambitious, talented kids from a wide range of backgrounds who will benefit from the school (and from whom the school will also benefit). It equates to about £20m spent on bursaries over the next five years and Moule, who comes from a comprehensive school background and I sense is a precious asset in anchoring the privileged pupils here to reality, describes the initiative as “the greatest privilege of his time”.

Moule clearly has a firm hand on the school tiller. Energetic and friendly, he’s honest in his assessment that there’s been too much ‘spoonfeeding’ education in the past and that he’s on the push for more meaningful community partnerships where boys get out of the Radley ‘bubble’. A greater entrepreneurial spirit is also front of mind, and to that end he’s introduced a new Innovation scholarship in 2025.

QUIRKS

Make a cuppa, we’ll be here a while. Get used to a whole new language at Radley. The first years are ‘Shells’, boarding houses are ‘Socials’, first year rugby players are ‘Midgets’, the nightly social gatherings at the boarding houses are called ‘Cocoa’. In some ways it feels like an Oxford University college, with its quads, boys in sub fusc gowns and even a JCR (Junior Common Room) for the Sixth Formers.

The games pitches are reputed to be the largest continuous area of mown grass in the south of England, but lest you think Radley is all about rugby elites, the college boasts the ultimate English quirk – a croquet club. The team are clearly mad for the mallet, unbeaten in 2024 and winners of the National Schools Croquet Competition in May 2025. At the other extreme, there’s a Model Rocketry Society where the boys basically fire off rockets on a Sunday (relax, with 800 acres to launch we’re all pretty safe).

Finally, there aren’t many schools where I walk into a biology lesson to find an in-house collection of lizards and snakes. One of the pupils was happily letting a python wrap its way around his body. No way I was trying that but, just saying, I did pat a lizard.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY

In the ‘Shells’, all boys are given an iPad and many teachers (or ‘dons’) use them in lessons. There’s a sliding scale that goes from restrictive to ‘controlled permissive’ as the boys move up the school. More info is here.

FEES

The fees for the academic year 2025/6 are £20,112 per term (inclusive of VAT), very much on the upper end of the scale.

BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIPS

Radley is able to offer a considerable number of fully or partly funded places to talented but financially challenged boys; you can fill out an enquiry form for this here. The Radley Keys Award offers up to six all-inclusive scholarships places for Y7, and up to six for Sixth Form too. The programme aims to reward sparkling potential rather than prior attainment.

Scholarships are also offered across Academic, Art, Drama, Innovation, Music and Sport.

WORD ON THE GROUND

I know quite a few parents at Radley and they talk about the children being kind and grounded – none of the “noisy swagger” you might expect of a top private school. Credit for this goes to the Warden, who they described as being “on a mission” to stamp out a sense of entitlement – apparently the award-winning community partnership programme with local schools is profound and ongoing. The Warden is liked and respected and ever-present around the school, but isn’t a “warm and fluffy” presence – he’s not interested in being obsequious to parents!

The view from the inside is that academics are taken very seriously at Radley now – the parents were aware the kids were expected to do well from the off, and they get a lot of homework. Some boys complained at the lack of freedoms they had between 15-16 years old to meet girls, but that seems to sort itself out in Sixth Form with more opportunity to hang out in Oxford, though there’s still a call for more official ‘socials’ with a greater range of schools.

Shout outs to Mr Noone in Biology, Mr Wiseman in Maths and Mr Mosdale in Physics – the kids I talked to rated you as their favourite teachers!

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Those looking for a top all-rounder school that focuses strongly on kindness and responsibility and sidesteps arrogance. Its unusual combination of immense rural site and proximity to Oxford (literally 15 mins) means it offers the best of both worlds. Talents and interests, no matter how unusual, are unearthed and nurtured here.

Not for: Academically Radley’s reputation is now strong – great for league tables, but not so pleasing for any boys who aren’t prepared to work hard. There’s no hiding in corners, and this is a school that expects results. Any child going to an all-boys full boarding school, even one with great pastoral care, requires a certain amount of steeliness, so very sensitive boys need not apply.
