<p>In a world where screen time is up, attention spans are down, and nature often comes second to phonics, outdoor nurseries are having a bit of a moment – and for good reason. Rooted in the Forest School ethos but going even further off-grid, they’re all about fresh air, freedom, and the sort of learning that doesn’t come laminated. But do they work? And are they just for the hipp-dippy-welly brigade?</p>

We spoke to the team to get the lowdown on why more parents are turning their backs on traditional nursery settings, and what makes this muddy, magical place stand out from the crowd.</p>

<p>If you’re worried your child might get a bit mucky, then you might want to scroll on – because at The Shepherd&#8217;s Hut Outdoor Nursery, the children go home muddy. Every. Single. Day. But don’t panic – this is&nbsp;<em>intentional</em>. Mud isn’t just tolerated, it’s celebrated. Why? Because playing in mud boosts immunity, reduces the risk of allergies, supports emotional wellbeing, and even releases serotonin in the brain (science says so – no really, it does).</p>



<p>From sculpting and digging to making full-on mud kitchens, the benefits are endless: social skills, early STEM learning, creative confidence, a love of nature, and, crucially, memories made outdoors rather than on a screen. Their motto? Mud is for everyone – and there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad waterproofs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-outside-the-box-and-classroom"><strong>Learning outside the box (and classroom)</strong></h3>



<p>What does a typical day look like? Think forest adventures, snack breaks under the canopy, nature-based maths and science, storytelling by the log burner in winter, and naps in the open air (yes, even when it’s snowing). Unless it’s utterly torrential or Arctic-level cold, the kids are outside all day.</p>



<p>This isn’t some free-range free-for-all either. The team combines structure and freedom with finesse. There’s a rhythm to each day, underpinned by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), but the way it’s delivered feels more Bear Grylls than Biff and Chip.</p>

<p>Nature&nbsp;<em>is</em>&nbsp;the classroom – and it turns out sticks and puddles are pretty powerful teaching tools. Learning outdoors boosts physical health (hello Vitamin D and bone density!), improves mood and concentration, and helps regulate emotions through physical movement and open-ended play. Children here become resilient problem solvers and independent thinkers. They learn through natural curiosity, experimentation, and, yes, the occasional soggy sock.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-about-the-basics">What about the basics?</h3>



<p>Worried that being outdoors all day means your child won’t learn their ABCs? Fear not. The EYFS curriculum is not only followed at The Shepherd&#8217;s Hut – it’s brought to life. As they brilliantly put it, EYFS is the skeleton – the outdoors adds the muscle, sinew and sparkle. There’s no need for plastic phonics sets when you’ve got real-world counting in a mud kitchen and shape-spotting in the trees.</p>

<p>Parents are curious – and sometimes downright hilarious. (Yes, someone did ask about the snake protocol.) The most common concerns? Cold, wet weather. Rest assured, the children are wrapped in researched thermal layers, and the team is fully clued up on how to keep kids safe and comfortable. Interestingly, extreme heat is far more of a worry, so they also have shaded areas, woodland cover, and even an air-con sleep room for younger ones.</p>



<p>Another worry? That the day might feel too unstructured. Nope. While there’s freedom to roam and discover, there’s also clear expectations, routines, and a sense of purpose to the day. It’s not chaos – it’s curated curiosity.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-humans-big-skills"><strong>Tiny humans, big skills</strong></h3>



<p>It’s not just the obvious stuff like climbing trees or building dens. Children develop nuanced social and emotional skills – empathy, collaboration, negotiation – all from working and playing together in nature. They also build resilience, confidence, and a sense of joy that’s hard to replicate under strip lighting.</p>

<p>Highlights include a slug being lovingly placed down an early years educator&#8217;s trousers (it needed somewhere “dark”) and a metal detector declaring a staff member a robot thanks to her underwired bra. You can’t make it up. As for the staff? “Coming to work is my therapy,” says one. “Work is good for my mental health,” adds another. When your office is a forest and your co-workers are giggling four-year-olds, who can blame them?</p>
