PizzaExpress, Oxford Golden Cross

PizzaExpress Golden Cross is back, and it’s serving looks alongside incredible pizzas. Fancy a tour and a peek at the new menu? Be our guest.

Nestled at the end of a snug, historic courtyard in the centre of Oxford, PizzaExpress Golden Cross has had the glow-up of our dreams. The listed building dates back to the 12th century, so it makes for a very memorable date night, and the fresh design stays true to its ancient heritage. There’s polished wooden panelling, shelves upon shelves of antique books (how very Oxford of them) and exposed brickwork aplenty. Breeze into the restaurant, and you’ll see its gorgeous conservatory too – ideal for the colder months when you’re still seeking those al fresco vibes.

It’s rumoured that William Shakespeare enjoyed a night out in Golden Cross back in the day, so you’d be in the most esteemed company when taking a seat at a glossy marble table after a shopping spree at the Covered Market next door. Almost as much of a long-running crowdpleaser as Shakespeare himself is the iconic menu here.

PizzaExpress has been feeding our Dough Ball addiction since 1965, and while you might pop in for your favourite Pollo ad Astra or Classic Margarita, there are some seriously delectable surprises to be had. Take the Four Seasons Speciale, a revamp of a much-loved 1965 recipe that allows you to taste a little bit of everything (Truffle? Tick. Calabrese sausage? Also tick). The Giardiniera is a gem too – Italian artichokes, fresh baby tomatoes, a drizzle of garlic oil. And if you thought salads were just for summer, the new warm roasted veg and chicken bowl will soon change your mind. Pure heaven, and you’re not left out in the cold if you’re gluten-free – Pizzas and Dough Balls can all be tailored to suit.

If you’d rather not share those Truffle Dough Balls with the littlies, hit the Piccolo menu. It’s a feast of pizza, pasta, salad, you name it. And to top that off? A Bambinoccino and a dessert (while you order a much-deserved dolcetti with coffee), all for a very reasonable £8.50. Collection and delivery options are also available if you’re cosying up at home and need some of the city’s finest carbs to warm your cockles. If we’re being completely honest, they’re on Muddy’s speed-dial already. Buon appetito!
