Hooray for high wasters!
Feel at your best on the beach this summer in a super flattering high-waisted bikini. Suits you!
When a fashion trend steps up for the real women among us, I do a little happy dance. This summer I may even do it in a bikini – because high-waisted two-pieces are having a moment.
Yes, teeny weeny Brazilian bikinis are out and I haven’t seen anyone in a tankini in forever. I was resigned to a life of tummy control one-pieces, after having my babies, but I’m embracing the high-waisted bikini this summer and long may it reign. For the most flattering option, I’d recommend going high-high – on or over the belly button and look out for style details like panelling and ruching.
This super-ethical bikini brand from Cornwall was started by mum Claire, frustrated by the skimpy swimwear on offer for her teenage daughter. Their sporty, high-waisted bikinis are expertly cut by French lingerie designers and made from sustainable, recycled fabrics. Perfect under a wetsuit, fashionable and fun – I’m sold! £39.99
How cute are these retro knitted bikinis? Brit brand, Olive Clothing is a new discovery and I love its simple, clean aesthetic. The top has a straight-cut neckline and adjustable straps with ring fastenings while the bottoms come up nice and high. And if you still can’t get your head around a two-piece, their belted and gingham swimsuits are just gorgeous too. £89
Ruching is your friend and mine – especially, as I have a C-section scar you can see through anything and double points for the flattering V-neck top. I love Anthropologie for its chic nomadic tendencies and you just know they’ve got the tasselled sandals and floaty cover-up this bikini belongs with too. Top £58 / Bottoms £48
I’m not 100% convinced of the support these tops will offer but if you’re more compact up top and just want a bit of extra tummy coverage – behold your (bargainous) new bikini! With sweet details and an even sweeter price tag, I might even need them both. £25.98
For bikinis that bring the fun, it has to be Pistol Panties. These two, colourful printed designs are really well structured and supportive but still feel youthful. Pistol Panties is known for its quirky style and feminine glamour and while they don’t come cheap, you’ll feel a million dollars on the beach. £159
You can rely on Toast for swimwear that’s stylish and designed for ladies rather than girls. There are three high-waisted options this season but this Ikat-style pattern is my favourite and it’s currently half price in the sale. Their swimwear is made with really good, quality stretch swim jersey and panelled for the most flattering fit. £25 Top/ £25 Bottoms
Gap has two graphic takes on the trend – one vintage-inspired and girly, one decidedly sporty. The high waisted bottoms and rash guard are particularly good if you’re an active type (though a sturdy bikini top underneath is probably a good idea), while the gingham two piece seems ideal for poolside cocktail sipping. Gingham top £23.99 / Gingham bottoms £23.99 / Striped rash guard £37.99 / Striped bottoms £29.99
